چکیده
We demonstrate, for the first time, the large electromechanical response in ne-matic liquid crystalline elastomers filled with a very low (∼ 0.01%) concentration of carbon nanotubes, aligned along the nematic director at preparation. The nan-otubes create a very large effective dielectric anisotropy of the composite. Their local field-induced torque is transmitted to the rubber-elastic network and is registered as the exerted uniaxial stress of order ∼ 1 kPa in response to a constant field of order ∼ 1 MV/m. We investigate the dependence of the effect on field strength, nanotube concentration and reproducibility under multiple field-on and-off cycles. The results indicate the potential of the nanotube-nematic elastomer composites as electrically driven actuators.

Recent advances in fabricating controlled-morphology vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VA-CNTs) with ultrahigh volume fraction create unique opportunities for markedly improving the electromechanical performance of ionic polymer conductor network composite (IPCNC) actuators. Continuous paths through inter-VA-CNT channels allow fast ion transport, and high electrical conduction of the aligned...

We study the low-frequency, long-wavelength dynamics of soft and semi-soft nematic elastomers using two different but related dynamic theories. Our first formulation describes the pure hydrodynamic behavior of nematic elastomers in which the nematic director has relaxed to its equilibrium value in the presence of strain. We find that the sound-modes structure is identical to that of columnar li...

متن کاملSpatially Nonuniform Heating and the Nonlinear Transient Response of Elastomeric Photomechanical Actuators
Recently various nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotubes and graphene, have been added to rubbery elastomers, such as poly dimethyl siloxane (PDMS), to enable generation of stress and displacement in response to remote illumination. While the response is primarily due to heat-induced generation of stress; i.e., the thermoelastic effect in rubbers, illuminated samples have shown unexpected devia...
متن کاملFlexible, Aligned Carbon Nanotube / Conducting Polymer Electrodes for a Lithium-ion Battery
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) present a new material for the construction of electrodes. The large scale production of aligned carbon nanotube (ACNT) arrays was first reported by Dai and co-workers [1], providing an opportunity to develop highly ordered, high surface area electrodes with excellent electronic and mechanical properties. While the latter two attributes are realized in the vertical direc...
